THE BOX began with field research in Udon Thani, where an aerial map of Ramasun Camp caught the artist’s attention. Its layout resembled a circuit board. This small visual coincidence became the starting point for an inquiry into the site and the histories embedded in its technological infrastructure.
Further research revealed Ramasun Camp’s history as a U.S. military base in Thailand during the Cold War: an intelligence and communication center equipped with advanced technology of its time. The site brought together systems of communication, secrecy, and surveillance, linking technological objects to broader structures of political power.
Seeking physical traces of this history, the artist searched antique shops in Udon Thani for discarded equipment and technological fragments from that era. The collected objects were modified, transformed, and reactivated to make sound again. Rather than reconstructing their original military functions or communications, the work develops new sonic expressions through experimentation and imagination.
Presented as a sound installation with a performance component, THE BOX connects the possibilities of memory between place, people, and technology. Objects once embedded in systems of control and communication are approached through their material presence and their capacity to take on different roles. Their sounds emerge from a process of reinterpretation, allowing the remnants of technological history to participate in new encounters.
The work offers a way for these objects to “speak” again, both as carriers of collective memory and as generators of new sonic narratives. Their past functions remain part of the encounter, while their reactivation opens other ways of listening to what they might become.
